Full description
The Johnston Canyon Evening Icewalk offers a unique way to experience the wonders of winter. As you explore the canyon under the stars, you'll heighten your senses, appreciating the darkness, the fresh scent of pine trees, and the tranquility of a night spent in nature. One of the highlights is when the group turns off their lights, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the serene stillness of a winter night.
As you navigate through the narrow, water-carved canyon, your small group will follow the guide along the path to the canyon’s lower falls. Suspended catwalks built into the limestone walls provide an easy and accessible route for everyone. Your guide will use a powerful flashlight to point out unique features along the way, and there will be pauses to embrace moments of darkness and quiet, enhancing the magical experience of being in the canyon at night.
At the turnaround point, your guide will shine light on the impressive ice formations encasing the flowing water. You’ll pass through a natural tunnel to a viewing platform right beside the magnificent Lower Falls. Enjoy a warm break with hot chocolate and a maple cookie while taking in the stunning frozen landscape around the falls.
On the way back, you can choose to turn off your headlamp and let your eyes adjust to the darkness. You’ll be amazed at how quickly your vision adapts, allowing you to travel through the pine forest guided only by the ambient light of the moon and stars above.
Additional Information

The minimum age is 8 years. All children aged 15 years and under must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian

This tour does not walk on the ice (as it is fragile, dangerous and you can punch through to the icy flowing water). You will be following the trail and steel catwalks that are built into the canyon wall and allow a spectacular view down the canyon walls to the ice and river below
It does get icy during the winter season which is why we provide ice cleats during the tour to give you extra grip while you are doing your icewalk
We cancel our tour at around -30 degrees Celsius or -22 Fahrenheit, and would offer to reschedule or refund your tour if this occurred
To ensure that you enjoy the tour, please wear/bring: thermals/base layers/long johns; Snow pants are recommended for this tour and are mandatory if it is below -16C (3F). Otherwise on warmer days, jeans/regular pants over long johns are okay; a warm sweater; a warm jacket. Snow pants and Ski jackets can be rented from stores in Banff; a hat and mitts; a neck warmer or scarf; sturdy, warm, ideally waterproof shoes; a water bottle
Please note that safety is our first priority. If the guide thinks your attire or footwear isn’t appropriate and compromises your safety on the tour, you may not be able to participate
Tips are not expected, but are certainly appreciated. If you think your guide did a wonderful job and would like to indicate that with a tip, it will be graciously accepted
