Full description
Embark on a fascinating tour of Mexico City's celebrated culinary scene with this small-group gastronomic tour, which includes a variety of tastings. Considered the oldest continuously inhabited capital in the Americas, Mexico City boasts a rich history and an even richer gastronomy, showcasing regional specialties from all over the country. Mexican cuisine has been recognised as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in recognition of its complex and fascinating food culture, based on traditional techniques and an incredible variety of indigenous ingredients.
This tour, guided by a local expert, will take you to explore Mexico City's historical and culinary heritage, allowing you to taste some of the city's most emblematic flavours. During this half-day experience, you'll have the opportunity to enjoy an informative tour of the capital's historic centre, where you'll admire iconic landmarks such as the Zocalo Square, the Casa de los Azulejos and the Palace of Fine Arts. You'll stop at a local taqueria to sample a varied selection of tacos and discover the key ingredients involved in the most iconic Mexican recipes.
The tour also includes a visit to the San Juan Market, a vibrant food lover's paradise, where you can sample exotic fruits and vegetables, as well as unusual meats, or even insects, if you dare. You'll also have the opportunity to explore the Mercado de la Ciudadela, where you'll find a wide variety of Mexican handicrafts. Along the way, you'll be able to sample traditional drinks such as tequila and mezcal, learning about their cultural importance in Mexico.
The tour will start at the meeting point in the historic heart of Mexico City, where you can familiarise yourself with your guide and the rest of your group before the tour begins. From the bustling Zocalo Square, you will travel back in time and learn about the roots of the city, founded by the Mexica people in 1325. As you pass the iconic monuments, your guide will tell you about the different civilisations that have shaped the city's history.
As you delve into the local culinary scene, you'll experience world-class Mexican cuisine at a local taqueria, where you'll enjoy a variety of delicious tacos, giving you a delicious introduction to one of Mexico's most beloved dishes. You'll learn about the traditional variations of tacos and the significant cultural relationship of corn, an essential ingredient in Mexican cuisine, which has been cultivated by the indigenous peoples of southern Mexico for over 9000 years.
A visit to the Mercado de San Juan, a key place in the city's culinary culture, will allow you to taste samples of fresh ingredients and learn more about the cultural influences that have shaped Mexican food. Afterwards, you'll head to the Mercado de la Ciudadela, a picturesque market where you can admire a variety of handicrafts and local products.
At the end of your tour, you'll enjoy a tasting of traditional drinks, including tequila or mezcal, while learning about their significance in Mexican celebrations and culture. Your guide, passionate about his city, will be happy to offer recommendations on other places to explore in the historic centre and beyond. Conclude your day enjoying exceptional gastronomy and a deeper understanding of the history and traditions that have put Mexican cuisine on the world map.
