Full description
Discover three of Mexico's most famous sites: Xochimilco, the Mexican Venice; Coyoacán, an ancient Aztec village; and the Frida Kahlo Museum on this full-day group tour. Explore some of the most picturesque and emblematic corners of Mexico City: the bohemian neighbourhood of Coyoacán, Frida Kahlo's former home full of charm and character, the canals of Xochimilco, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, and the Frida Kahlo Museum.
On this full day tour, you will be able to:
Discover Xochimilco, known as the ‘Mexican Venice’ and famous for its network of canals, popular with foreign and Mexican tourists;
Enjoy a trajinera ride through the Floating Gardens in a colourful gondola;
Tour the UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico) campus and admire the work of artists such as Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros, displayed on the walls of its buildings;
Walk through the cobblestone streets and visit the most emblematic places of Coyoacán, a quiet and picturesque area of Mexico City, and an ancient Aztec village;
Visit ‘La Casa Azul’, the house where Frida Kahlo lived and where she painted some of her most famous works, which is now the Frida Kahlo Museum, dedicated to her life and work;
Explore the Mercado de Coyoacán, an iconic landmark of this neighbourhood where you can find everything from vegetables to handicrafts, and learn about the daily life of the locals.
You'll meet your group in Mexico City and travel to the Xochimilco area. Here, you will explore its famous canals and chinampas (floating gardens), which were used by ancient civilisations as a system of agriculture and trade since pre-Hispanic times. You'll learn about the history of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, initially established as a pre-Columbian city on the shores of Lake Xochimilco, south of Mexico City. Then, you'll board a colourful trajinera and cruise along the canals, enjoying picturesque views of lush vegetation, floating gardens (chinampas) and charming bridges. These decorated trajineras capture the essence and soul of Xochimilco, representing a cherished Mexican tradition.
Next, you will visit the emblematic Coyoacán, known as the cultural heart of Mexico City. You will walk through its ancient streets and corners, exploring its markets, architecture, traditions, flavours and culture. Coyoacan is one of the most popular places in Mexico City, with stunning colonial architecture, vibrant colours and intricate designs that make you feel like you've stepped back in time. You'll find everything from brightly painted houses to quirky churches (such as the Santuario de Santa Maria) and even a former convent where nuns still live.
In the same neighbourhood, you'll visit the Frida Kahlo Museum, known as ‘La Casa Azul’, one of Mexico City's most beloved and significant cultural landmarks. Discover the place where this renowned Latin American artist lived and died, filled with personal objects from Frida's life and works of art inspired by her life experiences, which will give you a better understanding of this great Mexican artist. The house also served as a residence for Kahlo's husband, the famous muralist Diego Rivera. Their tumultuous but deeply passionate relationship forms an important part of the museum's narrative.
By the end of your tour, you will have learned a lot about Mexican culture and history, and you will surely have made some new friends along the way!
