Full description
Immerse yourself in the heart of Mexico City with a group walking tour that includes the Templo Mayor, Casa de los Azulejos, Palacio de Iturbide and the Museum of Anthropology. Embark on a journey through 700 years of history as you explore the city's historic centre and discover its most emblematic monuments, many of which are unknown even to locals. Your professional guide will share anecdotes and fun facts that will transform this tour into an unforgettable cultural experience.
On this half-day group tour, you will be able to:
Start the tour at the Museum of Anthropology, where you will see the Sun Stone, also known as the Aztec calendar, and the majestic sculpture of Coatlicue;
Enjoy a Metrobus ride with your guide to the Historic Centre, arriving at the famous Alameda Park, the oldest urban park in America;
See the Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico City's most important performing arts venue;
Learn about the history of the Palacio Postal, also known as Correo Mayor or the Central Post Office;
Visit the Palacio de Iturbide, an imposing 18th century mansion in the historic heart of the city;
Walk past the Casa de los Azulejos, an 18th century palace covered with hand-painted tiles;
Stroll down Calle Francisco I. Madero, one of the city's most vibrant pedestrian streets, named after a prominent figure of the Mexican Revolution;
Visit the Templo Mayor, the most important building in the ancient city of Tenochtitlan, where religious ceremonies were held.
The tour starts at the Museum of Anthropology, one of the most renowned and significant museums in the world. Here you can admire selected pieces from the vast collection of pre-Hispanic art, which offers a deep insight into Mexico's rich cultural heritage. The highlight is the Aztec Hall, where the famous Sun Stone (Aztec Calendar), a monolithic sculpture with intricate engravings depicting Aztec cosmology and art, is on display. During the tour, the guide will provide explanations of remarkable artefacts that reflect the beliefs, lifestyle and spirituality of ancient Mexican civilisations. You will learn about the design of the museum, designed by architect Pedro Ramirez Vazquez, which is a jewel of modernist architecture. The centrepiece of the museum is a spacious central courtyard, dominated by an impressive 11-metre-high stone umbrella structure, known as ‘El Paraguas’, supported by a single column decorated with engravings.
Then, after a short metrobus ride, you will continue exploring the centre of Mexico City, an area filled with iconic buildings. Your guide will tell you about the history of the place and its current importance for Mexicans. You will walk along Madero Street, one of the most iconic and lively pedestrian thoroughfares, which stretches from the Torre Latinoamericana to the Zócalo. Here you can enjoy the dynamic atmosphere of the area and see the Palacio Postal, the Palacio de Iturbide, and the Palacio de Bellas Artes, an impressive cultural landmark and architectural masterpiece combining Art Nouveau and Art Deco. You'll also see the historic Casa de los Azulejos, whose façade is covered in blue and white Puebla tiles, a popular attraction that now houses a restaurant.
Finally, you'll explore the Templo Mayor and walk through its ruins, where your guide will tell you how this monumental building grew in layers over time and explain the striking details of the Aztec religion. The Metropolitan Cathedral, which stands on the same site as the Aztec sacred precinct, was built after the Spanish conquest as a symbol of the new colonial order and the spread of Christianity.
Join this comprehensive and immersive group tour and discover the history and culture of ancient Mexico. Walk in the footsteps of the Aztecs and explore the spiritual heart of one of the most powerful civilizations in the Americas.
