Full description
Experience one of America's first cities, famous for the authors who called it home, such as Emerson, Thoreau and Alcott. Concord, a picturesque town northwest of Boston, is an ideal destination for history and literature lovers, offering a tour that connects important milestones of the American Revolution with the town's rich literary legacy.
On your private day tour, you can:
Visit the site of the first battle of the American Revolutionary War at the Old North Bridge, which not only offers beautiful views, but is also home to several historic monuments worth exploring.
Tour the grounds of the Old Manse House, famous for both its literary and historical associations, being home to figures such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathaniel Hawthorne.
Stroll through Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, a scenic and serene place, home to the graves of the Alcott family, Thoreau and Emerson, on the so-called ‘Author's Ridge’.
Explore the charming Orchard House of Louisa May Alcott, author of Little Women, and enjoy a guided tour of this historic residence.
Travel back in time to Walden Pond, where Henry David Thoreau was inspired to write *Walden*, his famous treatise on simple living in communion with nature. This site is not only historic, but also of unparalleled natural beauty.
Concord holds a key place in American history, shaped by rebellion, militiamen and a revolutionary spirit. Here, around 2,000 militiamen, known as ‘minutemen’ for their ability to be ready for action at a moment's notice, gathered to pursue British troops. The city's North Bridge is of significant national importance, as it was the site of the Battle of Concord on the first day of the War of Independence. The news of this battle in London was a strong statement of the courage of the patriot forces.
Honoured in American history as the scene of the first military engagement of the Revolutionary War, Concord paved the way for freedom and the creation of the United States. Beyond its importance in the Revolution, however, Concord is known for having been home to some of the most important authors in the history of American literature and the Transcendentalist movement.
Here, Henry David Thoreau wrote *Walden*, Nathaniel Hawthorne lived and wrote *The Scarlet Letter*, and Louisa May Alcott grew up in Orchard House, a key location in her novel *Little Women*. On your tour, you'll have the opportunity to visit Orchard House, with tickets included, to explore its fascinating literary history.
For true literary enthusiasts, we suggest a stop at The Concord Bookshop, where you can purchase works by authors who lived in this historic town and take a piece of Concord with you.
