Honoured in American history as the scene of the first military engagement of the Revolutionary War, Concord paved the way for freedom and the creation of the United States. Beyond its importance in the Revolution, however, Concord is known for having been home to some of the most important authors in the history of American literature and the Transcendentalist movement.

Here, Henry David Thoreau wrote *Walden*, Nathaniel Hawthorne lived and wrote *The Scarlet Letter*, and Louisa May Alcott grew up in Orchard House, a key location in her novel *Little Women*.
