We explore old Riyadh starting in the historic downtown area and visiting the traditional Dirah Souq, known for selling antique carpets and other significant pieces of Saudi heritage. The walk is filled with the scent of sandalwood and other oriental fragrances. This market is famous for its men’s clothing selection, and the Friday auction is an entertaining spectacle that draws many visitors.
Next, we head to Masmak Fort, located just a short walk from the souq, a place of great historical significance linked to the foundation of the Third Saudi Kingdom, the modern state we live in today. This fortified palace was built in 1895 during the reign of Abdullah bin Rashid to serve as a military garrison for his army. In 1902, King Abdulaziz, the founder of today’s Saudi nation, captured the fort, marking the beginning of the House of Saud’s reconquest of Arabia.
Finally, we make our way to the iconic Kingdom Tower, where the Sky Bridge offers a breathtaking panoramic view of Riyadh from nearly 300 meters above the city.
