We start our tour of Riyadh by visiting the primary custodian of Saudi Arabia’s national heritage and culture, the National Museum. Today, it is a place of learning and discovery, showcasing a unique collection of artifacts that trace the history of the Arabian Peninsula from prehistoric times to the modern era. The museum's carefully curated exhibits include ancient manuscripts, archaeological findings, and interactive displays that bring the region’s rich past to life.
After this visit, we continue to the nearby Murrabba Palace, once the royal residence where King Abdulaziz, the founder of modern Saudi Arabia, held his court. Built in the early 20th century, the palace was named after its square (murrabba) shape, measuring 40 by 40 meters. Today, it stands as one of the city’s most significant museums, offering a glimpse into the kingdom’s transformation under King Abdulaziz’s rule. Adjacent to the palace, a modern exhibition hall houses a collection of the king’s personal belongings, including documents, photographs, and personal effects, providing valuable insight into his leadership and legacy. These sites are at the heart of the nation’s history and the unification of Saudi Arabia.
We will then take a break to enjoy lunch in the city.
In the afternoon, we immerse ourselves in the traditional charm of old Riyadh, heading to the historic downtown area. Our first stop is the Dirah Souq, a bustling marketplace known for its exquisite antique carpets, handcrafted artifacts, and traditional Saudi heritage items. As we walk through the narrow alleys, the air is filled with the aroma of sandalwood, oud, and other rich oriental fragrances, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of centuries-old trade routes. The souq is also a popular destination for men’s traditional clothing, and one of its highlights is the Friday auction, where traders and collectors gather to bid on rare and valuable items in a lively cultural experience.
Just a short walk from the souq, we visit the Masmak Fort, a historic symbol closely linked to the foundation of the modern Saudi Kingdom. Built in 1895 during the reign of Abdullah bin Rashid, the fortress originally served as a military stronghold. However, in 1902, King Abdulaziz launched a daring raid to reclaim Riyadh, successfully capturing the fort and marking the beginning of his campaign to reunite Arabia under his family’s rule. The fort’s thick clay walls, watchtowers, and wooden gate still stand today, offering a fascinating journey through Saudi Arabia’s past.
To conclude our tour, we ascend to the iconic Kingdom Tower, one of Riyadh’s most famous landmarks. We make our way to the Sky Bridge, a breathtaking observation deck nearly 300 meters above the city, where we take in a panoramic view of Riyadh’s stunning skyline. From this vantage point, we witness the striking contrast between the city’s historical roots and its rapid modern development, offering the perfect way to appreciate the grandeur of Saudi Arabia’s capital.
