We begin our tour of Riyadh by visiting the primary custodian of Saudi Arabia's national heritage and culture, the National Museum. A key institution for understanding the historical and cultural evolution of Saudi Arabia, the museum, which opened in 1999, is one of the most significant cultural landmarks in the country. It houses a remarkable collection that spans from prehistory to modern Arabia. The museum is divided into thematic halls that cover various subjects such as archaeology, ethnography, and Islamic art, providing a comprehensive view of the kingdom's rich cultural heritage. Among its most notable exhibits are artifacts from ancient Arabian civilizations, as well as displays related to the history of Islam and the unification of the country under King Abdulaziz.
After exploring the National Museum, we head to the nearby Murrabba Palace, a historical landmark that once served as the royal residence of King Abdulaziz, the founder of modern Saudi Arabia. The palace, built in the 1940s, is a prime example of traditional Saudi architecture, featuring adobe facades and expansive inner courtyards. The name "Murrabba" refers to the square shape of the building, which measures 40 by 40 meters, symbolizing symmetry and balance. During our visit, we will explore the rooms where historic events took place, including the reception of important dignitaries and the signing of agreements that helped shape the kingdom.
Adjacent to the palace, a modern building houses a fascinating collection of personal items belonging to King Abdulaziz. These items provide an intimate glimpse into the life of the monarch and his legacy. Among the objects are his clothing, everyday items, and other personal mementos that reveal his personality and the history behind his reign. This space allows us to better understand the man behind the historical figure who unified the tribes of the Arabian Peninsula and founded the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932.
These locations, deeply connected to the birth of the Saudi nation, not only witness the country's political history but also reflect Riyadh’s transformation from a small settlement into a modern, thriving city. This tour gives us the opportunity to appreciate the rich history of Saudi Arabia, from its ancient roots to its modern-day evolution.
