The tour begins on the Royal Mile, Edinburgh’s historic main street, where you will be introduced to the city’s past while exploring the mysterious closes, narrow alleyways that hide centuries-old secrets. As we walk along the Royal Mile, we will stop at the Mercat Cross, where you will spot a unicorn at the top of the structure. We will uncover the meaning of this national symbol and dive deeper into Scottish folklore. Right next to the Mercat Cross stands St. Giles’ Cathedral, one of Edinburgh’s most iconic buildings. We will observe its gargoyles and learn about their purpose while searching for the most peculiar ones. Just in front of the cathedral, you will find a heart-shaped mosaic on the ground. We will reveal its story and why it holds a special meaning for the people of Edinburgh. Continuing our walk, we will reach Makar’s Court, home to the Writer’s Museum. Here, we will talk about Scotland’s most renowned writers, including Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott, and Robert Louis Stevenson.
From the Writer’s Museum, we will head to the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle, one of the city’s oldest and most historically significant buildings. We will take a moment to admire the stunning views and recount some of the key historical events that took place within its walls. Walking downhill from the castle, we will arrive at the Grassmarket, a large square with a fascinating and sometimes grim history, once used for public executions. A short walk from the square will take us to one of Edinburgh’s most picturesque and colorful streets, Victoria Street, where we will pause to admire its charming facades and take some photos. From there, we will continue along Candlemaker Row and reach one of the city’s most mysterious spots, the historic Greyfriars Kirkyard. Here, we will uncover chilling tales of grave robbers, haunted legends and more. From the cemetery gates, you will also spot one of the oldest schools in the city, George Heriot, an impressive building that has stood for almost 400 years. Just outside the graveyard, we will find the statue of Edinburgh’s most loyal dog, Bobby, whose heartwarming story continues to captivate visitors to this day.
