Our first stop will be the Castle Esplanade, where we will enjoy stunning views of the city and learn about one of Edinburgh’s oldest buildings. We will explore the castle's secrets while recalling the tales of kings, queens, battles, and sieges.
We will then walk downhill towards Victoria Street, Edinburgh’s most picturesque and colorful street. At the bottom, we will enter the Grassmarket, a square known for its pubs and dark history.
From Grassmarket, we will walk up Candlemarker Row to see Edinburgh’s most loyal dog, Bobby, and his statue outside the graveyard.
Behind Bobby stands the entrance to Greyfriars Kirkyard, where we will discuss Mortsafes and the connection between the Scottish Covenanters and George Mackenzie’s Mausoleum.
We will visit the National Museum of Scotland, walking through the Grand Gallery and discovering some of its Scottish and international highlights. There will be time for coffee and a rest.
From the museum, we will head to the Royal Mile via Cowgate, exploring historical landmarks along the way. Our first stop will be St. Giles' Cathedral, where we will discuss its architecture and Presbyterian history, as well as the Act of Union at Parliament Square.
Behind the cathedral, we will find the Mercat Cross, once used for public announcements and punishments. Discover why a unicorn sits atop this structure.
Continuing down the Royal Mile, we will explore its narrow closes and recall the stories of its past residents. We will stop at John Knox House and see where one of the old city gates stood.
At Canongate Tolbooth, we will uncover the meaning of the golden stag with a cross between its antlers.
A few minutes down the road, we will reach the Scottish Parliament, a modern and controversial building. Let’s see what you think of its quirky architecture!
Our final stop will be the Palace of Holyroodhouse, where we will admire its exterior and discuss its history and architecture.
