The city where Charles I of Spain and V of Germany was born, Ghent is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe. In the 16th century, it was the second-largest city in Europe by population, only behind Paris, which is why it boasts such a monumental historic center.

At 8:30 am, we'll pick you up at the main entrance of Brussels Central Station for an hour-long journey to the beautiful and mighty city of Ghent, home to the famous Van Eyck brothers.

First, we'll explore the Ghent City Hall, an enormous building with a complex facade that appears to be formed by two buildings, but it's only an optical illusion. One of the three famous towers of Ghent belongs to Saint Bavo's Cathedral, another stop on our tour.

Inside the Cathedral, the undeniable protagonist is the altarpiece by the Van Eyck brothers, "The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb," recognized worldwide as a masterpiece.

The second tower is the Ghent Belfry, standing proudly at 91 meters, topped by the city's symbol, the dragon. We'll visit the Grain Market and Ghent's Market Square, not only a historical square but also a monumental place surrounded by fantastic architecture.

Nearby, we'll find Saint Nicholas' Church, a magnificent example of Gothic architecture where we'll see the third tower. We can't leave Ghent without strolling along the Graslei and Korenlei Quays, crossing the canals of the city's old port via Saint Michael's Bridge, a magnificent spot to sit and observe the city and its people.

Other places we'll visit include the Great Butchers' Hall and the only medieval castle still standing in Ghent, the Castle of the Counts of Ghent, known as "Gravensteen" in Flemish, where we'll see remnants of its defensive system. It's the oldest castle of its kind in all of Flanders. After the tour, you'll have 4 hours of free time to have lunch and explore the city at your leisure.
