Full description Embark on a captivating journey today as we traverse the scenic interior of Sicily, heading towards Agrigento to explore the Valley of the Temples. Immerse yourself in a two-hour audio-guide independent walking tour of this UNESCO World Heritage site, featuring prominent structures like the Temple of Hera, the Temple of Concordia, the Temple of Hercules, and the Temple of Zeus. Agrigento, steeped in legend, is believed to have been founded by Daedalus and his son Icarus, who fled from Crete 'by air.' Historically, the city's roots can be traced back to 582 B.C., founded by Rhodian-Cretan colonists from neighboring Gela, who named their settlement Akragas after the nearby river. Under the rule of Phalarides, the first tyrant, and later under Theron, Agrigento rapidly expanded in size, importance, and military strength, extending its influence over northern Sicily as far as Himera.

In the afternoon, our journey continues to Piazza Armerina, where you'll independently explore the remarkable Mosaics Floor at the Roman Villa of Casale, a UNESCO Heritage site. Dating back to the 4th century AD, the villa was forgotten until 20th-century excavations unveiled its entirety. A supreme example of a luxury Roman villa, it boasts approximately 3500 square meters of floor mosaics and likely served as the residence of an upper-class member of the Roman Empire. The mosaics discovered here are revered among scholars of antiquity, and the visit inside the Roman Villa is self-guided, with information boards in every room.
