After lunch from downtown Zipaquirá we drive to the Guatavita Lagoon.
Located at 3,100 meters above sea level, in the jurisdiction of the municipality of Sesquilé, the former Chibcha chiefdom, is the Guatavita lagoon, the most famous of the sacred lagoons of this pre-Columbian culture since it was staged in the legendary rite of El Dorado, which had place every time a new chief was enthroned and consisted of the entrance of the new naked chief to the lagoon, mounted on a raft, to submerge himself in its waters.
At the same time, subjects released small gold statuettes called tunjos. For this reason, the lagoon has been the subject of numerous dives in different historical periods, all in order to rescue the supposed treasures hidden under its waters. The monumental northern gap presented by the crater that contains it corresponds precisely to an attempt to drain it.The park has a great attraction for national and foreign visitors which is contemplative tourism, where the charm of the Legend of El Dorado is enclosed, which, through history, told the rituals that the indigenous people performed to their gods bathing in gold and diving into the lagoon to offer their most valuable treasures.
This legend, which is part of our ancient cultural beliefs and roots, can be lived through a walk along the path that leads to the lagoon, at the top of the mountain and at whose maximum height is a majestic view of impeccable green of the nature of the region. In the first part of the tour we find a Chunzua or ceremonial house that represents the sacred place for the indigenous people, which they used as a sacred place for ceremonies and rituals. A wonderful replica that transports the visitor to the time when our ancestors lived.
Upon arrival at the lagoon and during a two-hour tour, an English or Spanish-speaking native park guide joins the group to explain the culture of the Muisca Indians, the legend of El Dorado and the biological importance of the area for approximately 75 minutes, including a 30-minute walk along a path to the rim of the crater to see the Guatavita lagoon. walking through the reserve listening to the history of the legend of "El Dorado" and the culture of the Muisca Indians.
After leaving the lagoon, you will get to know the town of Guatavita to explore the architecture and the environment, including the city's bullring and enjoy its beautiful architecture of old and cobbled streets, beautiful houses with white walls and clay roofs are the tribute to the Guatavita Vieja, a town that lies in silence under the Tominé Reservoir. and particular shape of their single color houses.
