At the agreed time, we will head from your hotel in Cairo to Alexandria, the most prominent Mediterranean city in Egypt.
We will start by exploring the Alexandrian port to visit the Citadel of Qaitbay. This defensive complex, built in the 15th century by Sultan Qaitbay, stands on the same site where the famous Lighthouse of Alexandria once stood. Several earthquakes destroyed the tower, and its remains were used to construct the Citadel.
Next, we will head south of the city to visit the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa. The bas-reliefs of this site, one of Alexandria's most remarkable, reflect the fusion between Egyptian and Greco-Roman culture. We will explore the three different levels to discover the passages, tunnels, and galleries housing the necropolis tombs. Near these catacombs, we will find Pompey's Pillar, located where the temple dedicated to the Greco-Egyptian god Serapis once stood.
Afterward, we will enjoy a lunch in central Alexandria, featuring seafood rice and fish dishes. In the afternoon, we will visit one of the city's most important modern buildings: the New Library of Alexandria. Created as a tribute to the ancient center that housed thousands of papyri and scrolls, this contemporary building, reopened in 2002, represents one of the most significant cultural spaces in the eastern Mediterranean.
