With this guided tour we will explore the most representative and fascinating places of the old Jewish quarter of Cordoba. We will start in the Plaza del Cardenal Salazar, one of the most emblematic squares of the city, to continue along the Calle Judíos, a route full of history that will immerse us in the medieval past of this important community. Along the way, we will also discover the Souk, a traditional market full of life and colour, and the Synagogue, the best preserved in Spain from medieval times. This synagogue bears witness to the splendour of the Jewish community in Cordoba before the expulsion in 1492.
During the visit, we will delve into the history of the Jews in the Iberian Peninsula, a people who arrived in Spain in Roman times, but who rose to prominence during the Caliphate of Cordoba. The Jews occupied high positions in administration, science and culture, and were an essential part of Cordoba society during this period of splendour.
On this route we cannot overlook one of the most illustrious figures in Jewish history: Maimonides. This world-renowned philosopher and physician, born in Cordoba in the 12th century, had a transcendental influence on medicine, philosophy and religion. Throughout the visit, we will learn more about his life and work, delving deeper into his legacy and the cultural context of medieval Cordoba.
The last part of this enriching visit will take us to the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos, a majestic fortified palace that was the residence of the Castilian kings during the Middle Ages. Built in the 14th century, the Alcázar has witnessed numerous historical events and has served as the seat of various monarchs and important figures. We will not have access to the interior, but the tour will culminate with a walk through the beautiful gardens of the Alcazar, a haven of tranquillity and beauty that offers one of the most pleasant views of Cordoba. This garden, with its fountains and exquisite landscaping, is a perfect place to relax and enjoy the historical and cultural legacy of the city.
