Founded in the 17th century by Afro-Colombians escaping slavery, this town maintains its own language, culture, and traditions to this day, and is recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

Guided by a local Palenque expert, you'll begin the experience by visiting the Cultural Center, where you'll learn about the town's history of resistance and freedom, its ancestral practices, and its unique identity. The tour will take you to iconic sites, such as Plaza Benkos Biohó, named after the leader who founded the first "palenque" as a safe haven for those fleeing slavery.

One of the most special moments will be meeting the famous palenqueras, the vibrantly dressed women we often see in the walled city of Cartagena, who represent the African heritage and the strength of their community. Throughout the day, you'll also immerse yourself in the artistic expressions of the people, discovering the influence their music and dance have had on the development of popular Colombian rhythms like champeta.
