Kruja is a small hilltop town, considered the "Balcony of the Adriatic Sea" due to its altitude above sea level (approximately 1000 metres). Kruja was the centre of the 15th century Albanian resistance against the Ottomans under the leadership of the national hero Gjerg Kastrioti "Skanderbeg". A must-see is the unique Skanderbeg Museum inside the restored castle and the Ethnographic Museum. The street leading to the castle is built in the style of a Turkish bazaar, we can stroll through the old bazaar which has a wonderful selection of authentic antique objects and souvenirs.
We will then continue to Durres, where we will also visit the Skanderbeg Museum inside the restored castle, the street leading to the Old Bazaar and the city centre. We can also admire the amphitheatre and the Roman baths behind the Aleksander Moisiu theatre in the central square. Durres is a historic, coastal city that offers a wide variety of tourist attractions, including beaches, a vibrant nightlife and a wealth of historical monuments dating back to Roman times.
All in all, this tour of Kruja and Durres is an excellent choice for those wishing to explore Albania's rich history and culture. From the fight against the Ottoman occupation to the historical monuments dating back to Roman times, these two destinations offer a wealth of attractions for visitors. In addition, the strategic location of Kruja and Durres, close to Tirana International Airport and a short distance from the capital, makes them an ideal choice for those wishing to explore Albania in depth.
