Full description
Our tour begins in the New Market Square, a charming and picturesque location in Rostock. Take in the unique blend of Baroque and Gothic architecture displayed in the Town Hall, featuring its distinctive seven towers. Your guide will share the fascinating story behind the Seagulls' Fountain, adorned with figures representing Neptune, the god of the sea, and his sons.
Continue your walk until you reach one of Rostock's highlights, St. Mary's Church. Remarkably, this is the only main church in Rostock to have survived the air raids of World War II. Don't miss the famous astrological clock, a masterpiece crafted in the 15th century.
Proceed to St. Petri Church, which served as a landmark for local fishermen. Although its Gothic spire was destroyed during WWII, it has been rebuilt and stands as a prominent attraction for visitors. Take the elevator to the top of the tower, reaching a height of 117 meters, and enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the surroundings.
Follow your guide to explore parts of the old city's fortifications, where you can see remnants of the stone and brick walls that once encircled an area of approximately one square kilometer. Some sections of the wall are still intact, featuring ramparts and guard houses, along with a segment of the wooden wall-walk.
Continuing along the wall, you will arrive at the Stone Gate, a Dutch Renaissance city gate constructed on the foundation of the former southern main gate. Admire the seals and symbols of the city displayed on the inner side of the gate, and read the motto inscribed on one of the walls: "Sit intra te concordia et publica felicitas" ("May harmony and prosperity reign within your walls").
Continue your stroll until you reach University Square, a vibrant hub featuring the Fountain of Happiness and numerous university buildings, including the impressive terracotta Hauptgebäude. Founded in 1419, Rostock University is the oldest university on the Baltic.
We will conclude the tour on Kröpeliner Street, a lively pedestrian street lined with shops. Take your time to explore and indulge in some quality shopping, surrounded by the cozy atmosphere of this charming area.
