Full description
Let's take a tour of some notable places in Hamburg that have left their mark on the city's vibrant history and culture.
Our first stop is the Operettenhaus, a historic venue in Hamburg. With over 150 years of history, it has undergone various name changes and transformations. Originally founded in 1840 as the "Circus Gymnasticus," it later became known as the "Centralhalle" in 1864. In 1920, it adopted its current name, the "Operettenhaus." Despite being heavily damaged during the bombings of 1943, it was rebuilt and became a renowned theater for plays and musicals, attracting international stars and audiences from around the world.
Next, we'll visit one of Hamburg's most famous police stations, located in the Reeperbahn district. This unique police station stands as a symbol of the city's tolerance and vibrancy. Situated in the heart of the red light district, it is known for overseeing the safety of the area, which is bustling with around 14,000 people every night. The building itself is considered one of the most beautiful in the district and has even accommodated famous guests such as Paul McCartney and Pete Best.
Our tour takes us to Herbertstraße, a street hidden behind barriers that bear the sign "women not allowed." This short, 60-meter-long street is part of the red light district, featuring infamous windows. Although prostitution and striptease were officially banned during Nazi times, these activities continued to thrive in the St. Pauli neighborhood, including Herbertstraße. The barriers were erected in 1933 to shield the public view, and signs were put up prohibiting the entrance of women. However, in reality, it remains a public street accessible to everyone.
As we explore further, we arrive at the street known as Grosse Freiheit, named in the 17th century to commemorate the granting of religious freedom to non-Lutherans and commercial freedom for craftsmen. Despite its name, this street has a mix of both holy and less sacred establishments. The area holds St. Joseph's Catholic Church, which contrasts with the vibrant nightlife and entertainment venues nearby. Notably, it was in venues along Grosse Freiheit, such as the Kaiserkeller, Große Freiheit 64, and the Star-Club, that the Beatles kick-started their career during the 1960s.
Our tour concludes at Beatles-Platz, a square that pays homage to the influential band's time in Hamburg. The circular black paving of the square represents a vinyl record. Here, you'll find statues of all the Beatles members, including John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Stuart Sutcliffe, George Harrison, as well as their early drummers Pete Best and Ringo Starr. This square serves as a reminder of the Beatles' formative years and their significant contribution to music history.
As we explore these landmarks and immerse ourselves in Hamburg's vibrant culture and history, we gain a deeper appreciation for the city's unique character and its connections to famous musicians and artistic movements.
