General Description
Visiting the Milan Cathedral and discovering the treasures it holds is an unmissable experience for anyone in the city. This extraordinary example of Gothic architecture is one of Milan's most iconic monuments, attracting visitors from all over the world. Join a two-hour guided tour to explore this majestic building located in the heart of the city, a place that leaves everyone who sees it in awe.
The tour begins in Piazza del Duomo, under the portico, where you will meet your guide. Once inside the Cathedral, you'll have the opportunity to discover the countless hidden treasures within. The tour also includes a visit to the Duomo's terraces, accessible by elevator, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of Milan. Your guide will share fascinating anecdotes and curiosities that you won't find in traditional tourist guides.
The history of the Milan Cathedral is rich and captivating: construction began in 1386 at the behest of Gian Galeazzo Visconti, the lord of the city, who wanted to build an imposing cathedral. The chosen site was previously occupied by the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Basilica of Santa Tecla. The work continued for over five centuries, with the final door being installed in 1965.
The Duomo is a unique example of a blend of architectural styles, from Baroque to Gothic and Neo-Gothic, and is made of Candoglia marble, sourced from the quarries of Val d’Ossola. With its 157-meter length and the tallest spire reaching 108.5 meters, crowned by the golden statue of the Madonnina, standing 4.16 meters tall, the Duomo is a symbol of Milan and its people.
Even the famous writer Stendhal was captivated by this masterpiece: "Every evening, around one in the morning, I would go to see the Milan Cathedral again. This church, illuminated by a beautiful moon, offers a spectacle of extraordinary beauty, unique in the world. Architecture has never given me such sensations" (Stendhal, November 5, 1816).
This tour offers just a glimpse of the wonders of the Milan Cathedral, leaving you to continue the journey of discovering this magnificent masterpiece.
