Embark on an exciting carbon-neutral full-day excursion with a professional and passionate guide, exploring the ruins of the ancient city of Mycenae, a major center of Greek civilization from 1600 BC to 1100 BC, as well as the archaeological treasure of Epidaurus. Follow in the footsteps of the ancient Greeks on this captivating journey.
Depart from our terminal via the scenic coastal National Highway, heading towards the strategically important Corinth Canal (brief stop). After crossing the canal, enter the region of Argolis, land of Homer’s legendary Golden Mycenae, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Dating back to the 2nd century BC, Mycenae was one of the principal centers of Greek civilization and a powerful fortress that dominated much of southern Greece. Skip the lines to access the archaeological site, home to the mythical kingdom of Agamemnon. Here, you will marvel at the Cyclopean Walls, the Lion’s Gate, the Royal Tombs, including those of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, and the Treasury of Atreus, an impressive 14th-century BC structure.
Next, stop at the picturesque seaside town of Nafplio, the first capital of modern Greece, known for its Venetian fortress of Palamidi and the fortified islet of Bourtzi (brief stop). After a walking tour of the town, enjoy a seaside lunch with stunning views of Bourtzi islet in the middle of the port. Those who choose the tour without lunch will have free time to further explore the town or relax with a coffee.
Continue to Epidaurus to visit its ancient theater. This UNESCO World Heritage site is reputed to be the birthplace of Apollo’s son Asclepius, the healer, and was the most renowned healing center of the classical world. Epidaurus is particularly famous for its theater, one of the best-preserved classical Greek structures, still used today due to its remarkable acoustics.
Your day trip concludes with a return to Athens in the late afternoon.
